Boulder Building Rules, Land Temptations, and Landmark Battles

So you want to construct your Boulder dream home in the foothills surrounding the city of Boulder? Sorry, we may have to crush that dream. Boulder has extremely thorough and difficult-to-navigate building regulations. Agents often market historic homes, mountain homes, and land as if these rules don’t exist. Let’s get into it. And while we are at it, we’ll cover inspection fights, recent sales around town, landmark disputes in Denver, new city fees, and even what a Michelin star means for Colorado dining.

Opening Story or Quote:

“There’s a sucker born every minute.” This line is most famously attributed to the American showman P.T. Barnum, although there is significant historical debate about whether he actually said it.

Many historians believe the quote was actually said by one of Barnum’s rivals, David Hannum. When Barnum created a replica of a giant statue that drew huge crowds, Hannum was supposedly quoted as saying it in frustration at the public’s gullibility.

Regardless of its true origin, the saying has become permanently linked to P.T. Barnum and his philosophy of entertainment and public spectacle.
